This method is not taught in Ayurveda schools, and it presents a greater understanding of how the components of Ayurveda work together to facilitate health.

Ayurveda refers to the “knowledge of life,” a system of health and traditional healing, rejuvenation and longevity, indigenous to ancient and modern India. Ayurveda is the oldest system of “functional medicine,” as it patient centered and addresses the underlying dynamics of health and disease in order to promote balance and increase vitality. Ayurveda entails a systematic approach to diet and healthy living. Ayurveda also encompasses Yoga techniques, breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation, massage, hygiene and cleansing practices, and behavioral approaches - with the goal to restore proper balance and function, to rejuvenate and maintain a healthy mind and body.

Yoga Therapy

The benefits of Yoga extend beyond the stretch. Clinical research findings include:

Yoga has been shown to be helpful for weight loss and weight maintenance, lowering blood glucose levels and increasing insulin sensitivity. Yoga training can also modulate ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and increase leptin (the satiety hormone).

Yoga can improve functional fitness without the need to use weights or resistance bands. The biomechanical demands of Yoga exercises can improve physical function and leg strength with regular practice, as well as improve balance and muscle control while also strengthening respiratory muscles.

Yoga can optimize the physiological response to stress, resulting in decreased anxiety, blood pressure, respiratory rate and heart rate, and Yoga has a positive effect in reducing depression. Effects of yoga practice include decreased cortisol (stress hormone) concentrations and increased concentrations of serotonin (happy hormone), which thereby lowers stress levels. Yoga also increases levels of melatonin, which may account for an increased sense of wellbeing. Yoga exercise can actually improve mood and anxiety levels more than walking for exercise.

A combination of Yoga practices are shown to increase blood levels of growth hormone and to promote healthy aging.
